To all Clubs and associated organisations who use our coastal and marine environment for their sport and recreation.
The Auckland Yachting and Boating Association (AYBA) emphasises the importance of yacht and boating clubs in Auckland, which serve not just members but also the wider community, offering facilities for various aquatic sports and activities. These clubs, crucial to the mental well-being of Aucklanders, face challenges related to land tenure, maintenance costs, and potential impacts from planning changes.
Despite AYBA’s efforts, including a 2017 report advocating for the protection of these coastal facilities, there is a lack of a coordinated coastal plan in Auckland, exacerbated by the fragmented decision-making process under the current “Super City” governance structure.
With the increase in apartment living and the loss of the “Kiwi” backyard, the preservation of our coastal environment and all the relevant existing facilities is crucial, especially when the Auckland Council Parks, Reserves and Environment Committee told the AYBA that: “Our Coastal land is better suited to alternative development!”
Towards this aim we, at the AYBA, are updating our records and would greatly appreciate your assistance by completing the attached form and returning it to the AYBA ASAP.
Attachment: Questionnaire – to be completed and returned plus – A brief summary of our aims working towards a Coastal Plan.
