The two exotic caulerpa Controlled Areas (at Aotea/Ahuahu and Te Rāwhiti Inlet) are set to be extended from their current expiry date of 30 June to allow further planning and consultation with all affected parties before the longer-term future of any control measures is decided.The end date is being considered and the extension will be for no later than the end of September. Small patches of exotic caulerpa have been discovered in Fantail Bay on the north-western coast, near the top of the Coromandel Peninsula.It’s disappointing to find exotic caulerpa in another new area but it is not unexpected given it can be moved by people over long distances on vessels and marine equipment. The Rakino discovery was made by Auckland Council staff investigating a reported suspicious sighting of exotic caulerpa. A small confirmed patch was discovered at Woody Bay, and then subsequently at other areas around Rakino. It’s hard to believe it’s been over two weeks since 11,700 people visited the 93 boats in the marina and the 60 boats and displays within the Viaduct Events Centre.
